We are going to Croatia in June this year.
We plan to stay in Makarska for a few days and then go to Brac and Hvar islands. We’ll be taking the ferry from Makarska to Sumartin and from Milna to Hvar and from there ferry to Dubrovnik where we plan to overnight and get on our flight the following afternoon. We never took the ferry before so I was wondering how reliable they are? We could cut our time in Hvar and stay in Dubrovnik for 2 nights but we would rather stay in Hvar longer instead. Thank you

I have used car ferries extensively in Croatia. They were always on time. Catamarans might be affected by wind/weather though.
I would stay on Hvar that night. The worst that can happen is that you miss the ferry to Dubrovnik. In that case, get to Split and from there, on the bus to Dubrovnik instead. There are plenty of buses to Dubrovnik. I wouldn’t be concerned about missing the flight.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, the ferry that leaves from Hvar to Dubrovnik worries me. So that’s good reassurance. Fingers cross for the weather/wind, I hope for sunshine not rain.

Catamarans can get canceled because of weather/sea conditions, and Hvar to Dubrovnik is one of the exposed weather routes. Even if there’s a problem with the catamaran, you could get the bus to the Stari Grad ferry port and the car ferry to Split and from there, get on the bus to Dubrovnik.

Here is an article about delays in ferries in Croatia: https://www.croatiaferries.com/delays-ferry-service-croatia/

This above is a type of catamaran/ferry that runs from Hvar to Dubrovnik, they are large and sturdy but sometimes they have to cancel the crossing if bad weather is predicted.

That’s good to hear, can I book the bus and ferry tickets on the day or should I buy a couple of days before, thanks

It is still a good idea to buy the ticket in advance for the catamaran – > see this article: https://www.croatiaferries.com/booking-croatia-ferries/

Getting a ticket last minute as a foot passenger on a car ferry shouldn’t be a problem.

The bus to Stari Grad shouldn’t be a problem either (see details here: https://croatiaspots.com/jelsa-hvar/). Nor for the bus from Split to Dubrovnik.

In any case, it is very unlikely that in June there will be problems with the weather. Even in winter, we have a lot of lovely days here in Croatia – have a look:
