Taking your bicycle on the ferry in Croatia

Taking your bicycle on the ferry crossing in Croatia is easy and affordable. Simply walk your bike onto the deck where it will be safely secured, then relax whilst enjoying your sailing. If you are traveling by ferry that allows bicycles on board, there is no need to dismantle the bike. In case your ferry doesn’t allow bikes, the best option for you is to dismantle the bike, put it in a bike bag, and let it travel as luggage.

Can you get on a ferry with a bicycle?

Yes, you can get on board by bike if the ferry accepts bicycles. As a foot passenger, it’s easy to take a bike on a ferry and upon arrival, cycle off from the port. Passengers traveling with bicycles generally check in at the same time as other foot passengers. They dismount from their bikes for safety reasons and push their bicycle up the same ramp as that used by passengers. If it is a car ferry, you will dismount from the bike (again for safety reasons) and use a vehicle ramp like that used by cars to push your bike onboard.

How do you board a ferry with a bike?

To board the ferry with the bicycle, you will dismount your bike before boarding the ferry. Walk along the terminal and onboard, along the ramp. Bear in mind that cycling shoes can slip easily on metal ferry decks so take care to maintain stability onboard especially if the sea is rough.

Cyclists sometimes embark before cars, or before other passengers, if they arrive early, but cyclists who arrive at the terminal after loading has started are likely to be boarded last (for reasons of safety) as in the below photo. Sometimes you will be asked to get to the front of the queue, sometimes to the back.

Once on board, if you are not sure where to put your bike, a member of staff will show you the place and will make sure the bike is secured to the rails, in case of rough crossing when your bike may get thrown around on the deck. The crew usually secures the bike to the rail if they expect a rough crossing.

To disembark, walk off the ramp, push your bike, and once you’re down onto the tarmac, you are allowed to cycle off from the ferry port.
